China Reaffirms Support for Somalia

(MENAFN) Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has pledged that Beijing will continue backing Somalia in defending its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

The assurance was delivered during a phone call with Somali Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali on Sunday, according to an official statement.

The discussion followed Israel’s December 26 declaration recognizing Somaliland—a self-governing region that broke away from Somalia in 1991—as an independent state. Israel is the only country to extend such recognition, a move that has drawn widespread condemnation, including from the African Union, which demanded its withdrawal.

Wang Yi reiterated China’s opposition to any efforts by Somaliland to “collude” with Taiwan in pursuit of “independence.” He emphasized that, in light of “changes in the international situation,” China intends to deepen cooperation with Somalia in areas such as security, defense, and trade, while further strengthening their strategic partnership.

“The two countries have always respected and supported each other, and the China-Somalia strategic partnership will not be affected by temporary events,” Wang stated.

Somalia’s foreign minister expressed gratitude for China’s stance, highlighting Beijing’s role in “opposing all acts of separatism and terrorism, and helping Somalia achieve national stability and development.”
